After losing her mother at a very young age it fell to her father, Abdallah El-Faouly, to raise her alone, and while he's described as being a doting, loving parent he was also too engrossed in his lifelong passion as an archaeologist to settle down into a more normal life, so the only life Layla has ever known has been one of exploration and discovery and learning. That same passion was clearly passed down from father to daughter, as she shared that fascination with archaeology to the point of happily accompanying him to every new digsite rather than being left behind with distant relatives or babysitters. Abdallah called her his "little scarab," and is unquestionably the single largest influence on her life.

As it was a very atypical childhood she learned many unique skills that would serve her well as an adult, instilling a sense of independence and fearlessness about venturing into the unknown to uncover secrets of the past— after all, she watched her father taking strides in his field on his own, and she was given plenty of opportunities to learn and build her own confidence with a supportive but often distracted parent. It's highly likely that it wasn't the safest place for a child, even under the best of circumstances, but Layla clearly thrived on it, and looks back on those memories with fondness rather than any bitterness at missing out on the conventional aspects of a more stable environment.

Lagaro, a longtime friend of the family and specialist when it comes to forgery — a skill that she's taught Layla as well — refers to archaeologists as "one big mess of obsessive bookworms" and that obsessiveness holds true for Layla as well, who has spent years learning about her home country of Egypt and many other cultures as well, and even outside of books Layla's repeatedly shown to have a seeming inability to give up on any venture she's taken up, whether it's professional or personal, the latter of which leading her to track her wayward, separated husband, Marc Spector, down despite the apparent breakdown of their marriage. As much as she tries to put walls between herself and anything that causes her pain she does care very deeply for the people that she considers friends and family, and that's something on which she never relents, even when she might not fully admit it, as she does when she is ultimately reunited with Marc.

Layla does especially struggle to move on, emotionally speaking, whether it's from her father's death or her husband's unexplained absence, losses hit her hard and she tends to avoid dealing with them rather than confronting those feelings.

While striking out on her own she's continued to hone an already inherent sense of practicality, since the pursuit of archaeology often leads to remote corners of the world it's also a necessity to be properly equipped and prepared, and Layla has taken those lessons to heart, not only striving to provide for her general needs herself but also taking full advantage of opportunities when the unexpected happens. Even the best plans go awry at times, and Layla is the type of person to roll with those punches and land on her feet. She's decisive too, aware that all too often a tight situation can turn perilous or worse, and she's definitely not the type to stand around wringing her hands when there's action to be taken, on her own if necessary. After the sudden, violent loss of her father she's even more motivated to rely on herself first and foremost, though not to the point of an irrational refusal to work with others, as she does not hesitate to reach out to Marc and Steven, in their areas of respective strengths.

The loss of her father caused her a massive amount of grief, and in truth she's spent years avoiding fully coping with it, as she tends to do, leading to an aversion to returning home. Instead she chooses to leave all of her unfinished business and former connections abruptly behind. With that unexpected bereavement she's also become more distrustful of those around her, all too aware of the horrors some people are capable of committing. It's undoubtedly a facet of her personality that's had an impact on her relationships with others, as when she's faced with Marc's apparently inexplicable absence from her life she's notably less than completely surprised at the revelation that he's hidden a large part of himself from her. And at the slightest hint that Marc has some awareness of what truly happened to her father she becomes fixated on learning the truth, despite knowing that it will open up those old wounds all over again and the awareness that it would complicate their mutual mission as well.

Though she has a very self-reliant attitude Layla is still shown to be empathetic toward others, even in extremely tense and difficult situations. Shortly after meeting Steven Grant, her husband's alter which she was previously fully unaware of, she shows initial skepticism but ultimately expresses a fairly quick acceptance of him despite lacking any forthcoming explanation on how he exists and exactly what it has to do with Marc, notably when Steven is overwhelmed and panicking she takes the time to soothe him ("It's alright. Okay. We'll find another way.") and refuses to leave him behind to face a dangerous cult alone, though she would have clearly had a much easier time slipping away on her own. Toward Marc, too, she shows a softer side, once telling him that they could have handled his problems together rather than letting it pull them apart, after months of silence on his part. Despite insisting that she only followed him to Egypt for the purposes of stopping a worldwide catastrophe it's clear that she still loves him, outright refusing to let him, as she puts it, "lone wolf this whole thing."

As one might expect due to her headstrong nature and her long-standing interest in history Layla has a distinct, strong sense of her own morality. She's rebellious against authority and laws and traditions that she deems unjust, a strong motivating factor in her dedication to recovering lost and stolen artifacts in order to return them to where they belong, regardless of who's taken them. She does remark "I might keep a few to pay the bills," as her lifestyle certainly doesn't allow for a normal job, but she's efficient, not living the lavish habits of artifact hunters merely interested in personal profit. The journey and her adventures, and the justice she can bring to the world along the way, are what truly motivate her.

5-10 Key Personality Traits:
-adventurous
-independent
-obsessive
-practical
-distrustful
-decisive
-empathetic
-rebellious

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? Fits, please!

Opt-Outs:
-arachne
-lich
-shade
-naga
-slime
-simulacrum

Roleplay Sample: tdm log thread w/marc | tdm toplevel

comments
